Conducting business is the same. Professionalism is a mandatory characteristic for any sustainable endeavor. The ability to make decisions without clouded judgment will separate successful ventures from failures. Emotional connotation can push ventures to new heights. Sometimes emotion can confuse progress with movement. Bold decisions can turn to reckless actions without proper discernment.

Professionals do not get flustered when harsh words are spoken. Criticism for a professional is always taken as feedback. Even if the criticism is a personal assault on character the professional takes it as feedback. Criticism is analyzed to decide if an opposition makes sense or is detrimental.

Thinking clearly during financial stress, emotional outbursts and hard deadlines separates failures from victors.

Professional Image

The image that crafts as a result of professional behavior is positive. Having professionalism means you have a Professional Image. Professional images allow clients, partners and shareholders to have confidence in your ability to lead. Inappropriate comments or personal assaults about others are characteristics of toxicity. At some point the presence of these chemicals will poison your environment. Do not ascribe to a culture derived off of negativity or adding emotional fuel to raging outbursts.

Professional Images serve to demonstrate consistency in product, service or trade. Clients want to know you achieve consistent results. Consistency is present in those that respond logically to all situations.

Verbal assault on your character = a professional assessment, a logical conclusion, and a courteous letter of termination.

Challenge to your integrity = a professional assessment, a logical conclusion, and a courteous letter of termination

Failure to meet project deadline = a professional assessment, a logical conclusion, and a courteous letter of termination.

Your failure to meet a project deadline = a professional assessment, a logical conclusion, and a courteous letter of resignation.

Failure to be paid for work owed = a professional assessment, a logical conclusion, and a courteous letter of resignation.

The point of these examples is to demonstrate the same process response for each situation. Anything other than professionalism does not serve the interest of either party. In each circumstance you notify all parties of resignation or termination.

You always deliver the reason for resignation to control the distribution of information. You must deliver information in non personal ways such as: Cursed at you = Inappropriate Behavior, Talked behind your back = Defamatory Statements, Tried to go around your back = Non Circumvention Violations…et cet.

Posturing

Posturing is a series of actions that result in a predetermined position. Every action that you undertake should be sequential. Each movement you make should have purpose. Each task you complete should have correlation. The result of your actions should result in an advantageous position. The position is then held to see if people will act fair or not. Most individuals will not calculate actions. Planning and calculation are different. Most people plan and don’t calculate.

Planning deals with ordering future chain of events to accomplish a specified goal.

Calculating deals with assessing the impact of possible outcomes that probably surface and the risk management taken to address the issue without compromising the specified goal.

Planning requires knowledge of steps to do something. Calculating requires experience with third party variables that do not allow plans to complete. Efficient calculators are Professionals who understand how to mitigate risks without sacrificing progress.

Without skill in “Posturing” more ventures will fail than succeed. The American Academy of Project Management (AAPM) runs basic theories on risk management. Risk Management serves basis for development of calculation. Calculation is synonymous with skill. All skills can be developed.

Delivery

Delivery is results. The result is what you are contracted to provide. Efficient posturing and Professional Images are great. Lack of task completion is failure to deliver. Without delivery all you accomplish is “Movement”. Movement is the false guise of progress.

Progress is the ability to measure goals accomplished as a result of activities undertaken.

In order to be successful you must deliver. You can only deliver if you have Progress. Calculation skills are good to “redefine” or “exit” a situation. Selecting Exit only occurs when integrity, morals, health or legality is compromised. Aside from these situations delivery must occur. Redefining your approach is the reason for success. Adapting to a changing world is important. If you fail to adapt to variables you will have large degrees of failure. Delivery will be the casualty.

Dealing with Change

As a Professional Entrepreneur you must recognize that things always change. Seldom will the plan you start with be the one you end with. Those that lack ability to comprehend this will grow frustrated with the process. Some will accuse you of not being consistent. Do not be let down by those that are not knowledgeable of this process.

A child may say you lied to them when they were 5 because you had to go to work on Saturday. Typically you only work Monday to Friday. You do not become enraged at a 5 year old child for calling you a liar. You pat them on the head, hug them and tell them you love them anyways. It’s not their fault they don’t understand the way the world works. To the child you’re a liar. To those knowledgeable the child is ignorant.

Take the same approach with those that do not understand constant change.

The inability to consistently fulfill your contracted scope will result in an unfavorable reputation. Constant change does not mean surrender on the end goal. Constant change means you must adapt based on the introduction of unknown variables. Unknowns will always be introduced. Anticipate the unknowns. Become a reactive person who can pivot. Often the fork in the road leads to a new path. The new path does not mean you stopped your journey.

Deliver at all costs even if it results in climbing a mountain when you were contracted to row a boat.
