“Did you vote?”

An elderly woman looks through foggy glasses. Her hair is bright blond. Some say it could be white. Those who know her say it’s never changed. Since she was a young girl she’s had bright blond hair. So blond it appears white.

Despite her aging one thing which never aged was her hair.

Her eyes are a hyper blue. They are kind and cool. She wears a shawl to blanket her from the cool air.

“No I didn’t.” replies a young man.

He’s young. His hair is like a coarse brillo pad. The young man’s hair knew moisturizer and conditioner once upon a time. Those products stopped coming to his house a few years ago. They are too expensive to buy now. The beauty industry abandoned chemicals in the 2030’s and global warming devastated agriculture in the 2050s. Texas &, Oklahoma nearly became deserts in the 2060’s. South Florida and Mississippi were abandoned because of sea level rising.

Funny how no one saw that coming even though they were talking about it in 2018.

Natural product prices soared out the roof in the 2060’s.

The young man’s frame is slender. He appears to be in shape. A lot of young people benefitted from losing weight these past few years.

Everyone says it’s because they make smarter choices. The term is “Intermittent Fasting”.

The truth is there’s just not much food to go around.

The Media always puts a spin on reality.

“You should have.” The woman retorts in a judgmental way.

The young man looks up. His brown skin darkened by the sun.

“Rosie. What’s the point?”

Rosie looks at him.

“Antoine. Do you know what happened when less than half of our young people didn’t vote back in my day?”

Antoine seems to have a cloud of confusion settle around his eyes. A muddle appears to manifest itself. It’s as if her words are dancing around in circles in his mind.

Noplease tell me.”

Antoine talks to her as he picks up a glass bottle from the ground. He swishes it around to see if there is any water in it worth drinking.

“Antoine! I told you to stop looking for rancid water! It’s 2071! You’re supposed to know better!”

Antoine shrugs and guzzles it anyways.

“I rather have a stomach ache than be thirsty.”

Rosie shakes her head in protest. Her frustration is written all over her face. Then it cools. Almost as if she was an explosion of water. It appears fierce but then all realize it is only water. No fire to burn away those in its path.

Apparently Antoine knows Rosie too well.

“I’m 81 years old today. I’ve seen almost a full century. What hasn’t changed is short term thinking in our youth.”

Rosie begins to shuffle through her bag. It is as if she is wrestling a sea monster below the surface of a black shadow ocean. Antoine continues to look on wondering when the struggle will end.

“There it is.” Rosie pulls out what looks like a slim screen.

“Is that an…I-Pad???” Antoine stares in amazement.

Rosie grins. A proud smile forms on her face.

“It sure is.”

Both ponder the amazement of this piece of technology. A once proud American beacon was reduced to bankruptcy over its privacy mechanisms.

How ironic Rosie holds a rare treasure which once dominated a global market.

Apple became the first trillion dollar market value company in 2018. The company leaped hurdle after hurdle. Apple was an unstoppable bounder who could jump higher than any other company in the early part of the 21st century. Once, Apple made more than 50% sales growth per year.

Then in the 2020’s the ancient COVID-19 pandemic contributed to tech valuation explosions. Companies doubled and tripled in value. Apple increased 60% in a single year.

During the 2030’s everyone began to realize technology companies didn’t have anything tangible on their balance sheets. Everything was based on consumer demand and confidence. There was nothing to back up the values.

Millennials only held position in technology companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Bitcoin.

When demand and confidence evaporated the companies plummeted in value to zero.

The entire millennial generation became impoverished overnight.

When America began moving towards socialism in 2010 it was seen as a novelty. In 2019 only 42% of people supported socialism. When COVID-19 occurred the ultra-rich profited 10.2 Trillion. Everyday people were being evicted from their homes. Politicians claimed it was private citizens taking from them.

Many people agreed. So a mass exodus from capitalism began after 2021.

No one cared about turning a profit after COVID-19.

People were mad at the rich.

People wanted equality.

Universal Basic Income (UBI) was introduced to 850,000 families during COVID-19. By 2040 UBI had replaced most jobs.

People thought this was good at the time.

The 2030 bubble burst an explosion which left everyone in the stock market with a wet T-shirt. So UBI became the solution to avoid poverty.

What UBI inadvertently did was create generations of people who didn’t care about money or business. They stopped searching for reasons to invest. Everyone was scared. They didn’t trust capitalism. As long as the basic essentials got covered nothing else mattered.

The only thing that persisted was social media.

Now people like Antoine don’t know anything about providing for themselves. They just rely on big brother. The government was the only answer for a lot of people in the 2020’s.

But a small group of people disagreed. When Donald Trump was thrown in jail America entered a dark chapter.

“So what is on the I-Pad?” Antoine’s gaze is mystified by the ancient technology.

Antoine continues to look on in amazement and wonder.

“I’m surprised you can still charge that thing.”

Rosie continues to smile. Her eyes crease from the grinning. Her smile gets bigger as she powers the piece of tech up.

“This piece of hardware was created before monitoring chips were mandated by the government. So it contains information off the grid. It has news videos from pre-2040.”

Antoine eyes grow wide. His eyes look like mouths in a damn that open to flood in water. Desire is his water. The rushes of his emotion spill out uncontrollably.

“Are you saying we can watch a YouTube video!!!????”

Rosie looks at him with a compelling glare. People haven’t been able to publish unfiltered social media messages since 2025.

“Oh sweetie. We can do more than that. I can show you a whole bunch.”

Antoine scoots up close to her.

“It looks like this is about…failed voter turn outs…”

Rosie begins to nod her head.

“Yes sort of. Let me show you this video.”

Both begin to stream a video from President Trump.

“I know that guy…” Antoine trails under his breath. His voice seems unsure of where its footing will take hold in his statements.

“… he’s the president everyone indicted in his second term. Then a civil war broke out 5 years after he went to jail…”

Rosie pats him on the head.

“So they do teach history to you.”

Antoine nods to confirm his pride. “…Trump wanted to keep capitalism. Everyone else didn’t want it. They wanted to get rid of Wall Street. That’s why it’s renamed Freedom Lane today…”

Rosie smiles a nod of approval.

“So you know why he got elected. DO you know why we ended up having a civil war?”

Antoine looks at her with a look beyond surprise.

“Rosie everyone knows it’s because rich people wanted to rule us and we the people wanted equality.”

Rosie shakes her head in disappointment.

“No dear. It was about voter suppression. A bunch of ballots were thrown out and not counted. More important young people didn’t show up to vote but wanted a voice when things got bad. Young people didn’t show up because they thought everyone was corrupt. It wasn’t about money. It was about people not thinking they had a voice…”

Antoine launches to his feet like a Space-X Falcon Rocket.

“But that’s the same thing! Rich people were suppressing us right?”

Rosie looks on with more than wisdom. Her face tells the truth. She lived it. This is no history lesson. This is history come to life.

“Dear. People with money wanted to make money. This is true but the politicians used their office to get paid. Joe Biden never addressed the 3.5mm payment to his son in the 2020 presidential debate. Donald Trump was a liar, a deceiver and a lot of stuff…but he wasn’t a politician. He hated all politicians and wanted to bring them down.”

Antoine sits back on the cracked cement bench. It shudders under his weight. It breaks off and he topples on the floor.

“Are you okay!?”

Rosie stammers out.

“I’m fine…” Antoine stands to his feel.

“These benches haven’t been serviced in 25 years…” Rosie dusts him off. “…Sorry honey. I should have picked a better spot.”

Rosie trails off.

“It’s okay Rosie. I get the point. Basically we have this situation because people didn’t vote and politicians were the real “rich” people.”

Rosie smiles a nod of approval.

“That’s right honey. The politicians made it like it was private citizens getting rich. But the truth was it was politicians the entire time getting paid off Wall Street. We fought a civil war against our politicians enriching themselves not other private citizens with money. There were some bad ones but most of them ended up funding our struggle.”

The irony of the statement takes hold. Antoine looks at the I-Pad screen and then looks at the hologram projection in the middle of New York City.

Both stare at each other in amazement as history really does repeat itself.

To your knowledge success!
